Southern French style is often mistaken for floral prints, distressed wood and a
whole field of lavender. The real Provençal feeling comes from light, texture and
empty space: lime-washed walls soften the sun, terracotta and stone leave the mark
of the hand, olive leaves catch the light in silver-green, and linen and rattan
slow the room down.

In a Hong Kong high-rise we do not have a field of lavender, but the same proportions
can go onto a terrace, by a window and into a living room. The five photographs
below break the approach down.

## 1. Start with a wall and a floor

![Stone courtyard with an old olive tree, terracotta pots at different heights,
and the sea beyond the door](https://leeflora.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/02-
courtyard.jpg)

Stone walls, an old olive tree and pots of different sizes form the skeleton of
a Southern French courtyard.

Southern French walls are not glossy white. They are grainy lime plaster, micro-
cement or old stone, which scatter direct light and make the interior feel softer.
In humid Hong Kong, real lime plaster is hard to maintain; on a terrace use an outdoor
mineral paint or a mould-resistant exterior paint, and indoors use a warm white
or greige art paint or matt emulsion rather than a cold white.

The floor matters too: stone slabs, gravel or outdoor timber feel closer to the
South of France than polished tiles. On a Hong Kong terrace, choose slip-resistant
outdoor tiles with good drainage and keep a drain clear. Do not pave every inch;
leave a gravel or stone edge so the plants look as if they grow out of the ground.

## 2. Plants and terracotta pots: the basic unit of Southern French style

![Olive tree, rosemary, lavender and succulents in terracotta pots with white gravel](

Olive, rosemary, lavender and succulents arranged in rough terracotta pots at different
heights.

The hero plant of the South of France is the olive tree. Silver-green leaves, twisted
branches and an open canopy carry the feeling of wind and sun. It can be grown in
Hong Kong, but it needs full sun, airflow and excellent drainage; a terrace or rooftop
suits it better than indoors. In low indoor light, choose [a faux olive tree](https://leeflora.com/en/product/%e4%bb%bf%e7%9c%9f%e6%a9%84%e6%ac%96%e6%a8%b9-faux-olive-tree/)
as a focal point and pair it with real plants. To see a real tree, the shop has
[a potted olive tree](https://leeflora.com/en/product/%e6%a9%84%e6%ac%96%e6%a8%b9-olive-tree/)
available to buy.

The supporting cast is herbs and silver-green plants: rosemary, sage, thyme and
lavender. Lavender struggles through a Hong Kong summer and needs drainage, airflow
and shelter from rain; beginners can start with rosemary and sage. For flowers,
choose agapanthus, geranium or bougainvillea, keeping to pink, purple and white,
with no more than two colours.

Pots are the soul of the look. Terracotta is porous, breathable and warm in colour,
but heavy and absorbent; in humid Hong Kong, use a glazed or sealed terracotta pot
indoors, and on a terrace check drainage and secure pots before a typhoon. Vary
the sizes: one tall olive pot, two or three medium herb pots and a few small succulent
pots, at different heights. Our [flower pot collection](https://leeflora.com/en/product-category/%e8%8a%b1%e7%9b%86-pot/)
includes concrete and frosted pots that can also create a quiet Southern French
feel.

## 3. Bring the South of France indoors

![Southern French style living room: arched window, linen curtains, rattan chair,
terracotta vessels and a large plant](https://leeflora.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/
10/03-living-room.jpg)

Bringing the South of France indoors: an arched window, linen, rattan, pottery and
one large plant.

The whole room does not need to become a country cottage. A few elements are enough:
an arched window or a curved window edge, linen curtains, a rattan chair, an old
wooden cabinet, terracotta vessels and one large plant. Use off-white, lime, olive
green and terracotta, roughly 70% neutrals, 20% green and 10% terracotta or flower
colour.

Light matters more than furniture. Swap heavy blackout curtains for linen or cotton-
linen so light comes through; do not seal the window with a thick blind. Put plants
by the window but out of the midday sun; in a dark corner, use a faux olive tree
or shade-tolerant plants (such as varieties from [our indoor plant collection](https://leeflora.com/en/product-category/%e6%a4%8d%e7%89%a9plants/indoor-%e5%ae%a4%e5%85%a7%e6%a4%8d%e7%89%a9/))
to fill the gap.

Hong Kong is humid, and rattan and linen can grow mould; choose washable or mould-
treated pieces, and put a soft pad under terracotta vessels so they do not scratch
the floor.

## 4. Space and leisure: one lounger is enough

![Outdoor lounger under a reed pergola, with an olive tree, lavender and sea view
beside it](https://leeflora.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/05-daybed.jpg)

Leave one lounger and a small table so the terrace has room to breathe.

The relaxed feeling of Southern French style comes from not filling every space.
A terrace does not need a full outdoor sofa set: one lounger, a small table and
a few terracotta pots, with the view left to the sky and the plants, are enough.

Hong Kong terraces are usually small, so keep furniture light and easy to store;
before typhoon season, move cushions and rattan chairs inside and weigh down or
secure the pots. Keep the drain clear and do not let water stand after watering.
If privacy is an issue, use a bamboo or reed screen or tall plants rather than building
a fence.

## 5. Five checks for Hong Kong

 1. **Light**: olive trees and lavender need full sun; in low indoor light choose faux
or shade-tolerant plants. Start with [the plant light guide](https://leeflora.com/en/plant-light-guide/),
then compare it with the light where you plan to put the plant.
 2. **Water**: terracotta is breathable, but water when the top dries out; in the Hong
Kong rainy season, do not let water sit in the saucer.
 3. **Airflow**: Mediterranean plants dislike stagnant air; keep the terrace ventilated
and put indoor plants by a window, not in a corner.
 4. **Weight**: a terracotta pot with wet soil is heavy; check the terrace load and
do not cluster everything in one spot.
 5. **Proportion**: use three heights (tall, medium, low); repeat three pot sizes two
or three times rather than making every pot different.

## FAQ

### Does Southern French style need lavender?

Not necessarily. Lavender struggles through a Hong Kong summer; rosemary, sage or
thyme, or flowering plants such as agapanthus and geranium, can take its place.
What matters is the silver-green colour, scent and layered heights.

### Can olive trees grow in humid Hong Kong?

Yes, but they need full sun, airflow and excellent drainage; a terrace or rooftop
is better than indoors. Do not let water sit in the saucer, and check drainage in
the rainy season. In low indoor light they will drop leaves over time.

### Can I create the look on a small balcony?

Yes. One tall olive or faux olive, three medium herb pots and two or three small
pots already give a complete set of layers; do not try to fit every plant in.

### Terracotta or concrete pots?

Terracotta is breathable and warm in colour, but heavy and absorbent; concrete is
solid and modern, and suits a terrace. In humid Hong Kong, use glazed or sealed
terracotta indoors; on a terrace, both need drainage holes.

### Do faux plants look fake?

Choose leaves with depth and a colour that is not too bright green, place them in
a darker corner or high up, and pair them with real plants and terracotta pots;
from a distance they are hard to tell apart. Do not line up a whole row of faux
plants.

## In closing

Southern French style is not a colour or a pile of decorations; it is light, texture,
plants and empty space brought together. Rather than buying more, start by taking
things away: a clean wall, a few terracotta pots, an olive tree and a chair you
can sit in.
